I come from a family of educators. My grandmother graduated from Jersey City Normal School (the first teacher training school in New Jersey) in 1901. My father was an elementary school teacher as was one of my brothers. My sister and I both chose to teach at the high school level. My stepdaughter and her husband are both teachers. I come from a family of educators and have always loved my chosen profession.
Being a teacher brought me so much joy and fulfillment. I have so many fond memories and some really great stories! There were plenty of times of stress and anxiety but they were overshadowed by the amazing times I had with colleagues and students. It was a wonderful time to be an educator.
Many of the educators I work with today are not having the same experiences I had. When I started the teacher morale program back in the 1990’s…we thought we were stressed. Yikes! We had no idea the stressors that were awaiting public school educators. No idea.
Stressed out, wired and tired teachers and administrators need policies and changes that support them. Many are exhausted and have forgotten why they entered this amazing profession. It’s time to reignite the enthusiasm in our profession.
